El Roi

El Roi
God Who sees me

The Hebrew name of God El Roi is found once in the Old Testament in Genesis 16:13-14 on the lips of Hagar, Sarai’s maid. Because of Sarai’s jealous, harsh treatment of her, Hagar fled and found herself in a desperate, lonely, thirsty place.

An angel of the Lord came to her by a spring in the wilderness with instruction and comfort. Hagar declared, “You are El Roi!” meaning You are God Who sees me!

She named the well Beer-lahai-roi meaning Well of the Living God Who sees me. God was aware of her! The spring was His provision that let her know He was attentive to her plight.

David was aware of this all-seeing God. Psalm 139 lets us see his heart – “O Lord, You have searched me and known me... You understand my thought from afar. You surround my path and my lying down, and You are acquainted with all my ways...If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me... ”

The eyes of God are kind and are not looking for our mistakes, but are lovingly watchful and aware of our needs! The Lord declares in Isaiah 66:2, “To this one I will look, to the one who is humble and of contrite spirit and who reverences My word.”
