“And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:5)
The Light of Yeshua (Jesus) shines into the darkness, confusion, and deception of the effects of the evil one. But the darkness does not comprehend the Light.

The original records of Yeshua’s disciples were scribed in Hebrew before they were translated into Greek for the surrounding culture.[i] The Greek word for comprehend in this verse is katalambano which means either to comprehend or to overpower. (This is why Bible versions differ in this verse.) However, the context of the verse as well as the underlying Hebrew word hāsēr (also found in the Aramaic) gives us the more accurate meaning of this word. Hāsēr means lacking in wisdom and understanding, and it refers to man’s spiritual predicament without God – he has an inability to comprehend, perceive, recognize, and grasp spiritual truth.

In John 1:1-14, we first read that Yeshua was in the beginning and created everything that has come into being. He is the Light of the world made flesh on this earth. However, “His own did not receive Him.” (John 1:11) Many of the Jewish people did not recognize Him as their long-awaited Messiah, the Light, and the Truth. The condition of their hearts either clarified the truth or blinded them from the truth.

Yeshua said, “Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) In other words, unless the Father gives new birth, a person cannot perceive the realm of the Kingdom of Light.

The Apostle Paul said, “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them because they are spiritually appraised…” (1 Corinthians 2:14-15) The natural man cannot see the kingdom of God.

We need to realize the utter blindness that is in the world and the veil that covers the hearts of people without God. We need to remember how we were blind and “dead in our trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1-3) until He caused us to be born again (John 1:12-13). Then, we can pray powerfully in these four ways for those who are still in the darkness:

1.  Father, draw __________(Name) to Yourself. The Father must draw us to Yeshua.

Yeshua said, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him...” (John 6:44)

2.  Father, reveal Yourself to __________(Name). The Father must reveal to us Who Yeshua is.

Yeshua came into the district of Caesarea Philippi and asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Immerser; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” Yeshua said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And Yeshua said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”
(Matthew 16:13-17)

3.  Father, save __________(Name). After He draws us and reveals Himself to us, we receive His Gift of eternal life through Yeshua, and then The Father saves us!

“But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit whom He poured out upon us richly through Yeshua Messiah our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7)

4.  Thank you, Father, for sealing __________(Name)! The Father seals us as His forever!

“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation – and having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise who is given as a pledge of our inheritance with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession to the praise of His glory!” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Father, You initiate Your love to us and others by drawing us to Yourself through Yeshua’s sacrifice on our behalf, and by revealing Yourself to us and asking us to receive You, and by saving us eternally! Thank you for sealing us in Your love until we see you face to face! Help us to pray for others to be drawn to Your heart, to receive revelation of Who You are, and to save and seal them by Your grace!

[i] (Some have argued that Yeshua spoke Aramaic, but research shows there was a resurgence of speaking and recording in Hebrew after the Maccabean victory in 164 BC.)

God bless you Beth Ann! What a beautiful teaching from God's Word. May those we pray for (as God's children co-labor in Christ) be found in Him on that day. All glory belongs to God for saving a wretch like me! Through Yeshua by the gospel (power of God) the LORD has done it!!

Welcome to Shale Fragments, a collection of writings and art for individual and group use!

Teaching God’s truth and the beauty of His Word is my greatest delight! My art card company, Flower Girl Greetings, was launched in 2012 with this purpose. In April 2020, ShaleFragments.com became the gathering place for the writings.

As I have studied the rich meanings of the original Greek and Hebrew languages of the Bible, I continue to see beautiful progressions and connections that compel me to organize and convey their life-changing beauty!
