Noah’s Calling and Ours
Our hearts, God’s resting place

Within the ancient Hebrew culture, a person’s name was linked to their character and calling. Noah means rest.

“Now He called his name Noah saying, ‘This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed.’” (Genesis 5:29)

Previously, the ground had been cursed because of mankind’s rebellion (Genesis 3:17). The Lord was grieved in His heart at the great wickedness of man. (Genesis 6:6)

  • God called Noah to bring rest.
  • God called Noah to reverse the curse by bringing a new beginning of rest.
  • God called Noah to provide relief from God’s grief. God would find a resting place in the new beginning, in those who loved Him.

The ark that Noah built with great faith represents safety and rest from the storm. We are in Him and He is in us. We find rest in Him, and we open our hearts to give Him restful delight.

Noah’s Rest and Ours
God’s heart, our resting place

Prophetic words bloom forth right in the middle of the account of Noah’s life in the ark. Listen to their beauty in Genesis 8:8-9.

Then Noah sent out a dove from him to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her and brought her into the ark to himself.

God takes us into the ark. There is no resting place outside of Him. The ark represents strength, safety and rest from the storm. We are in Him and He is in us. In returning to Him, we find rest and rescue. In quietly trusting in His strength, we are strong.

Matthew tells the story of another boat. Jesus got into the boat, and His disciples followed Him. A great storm arose on the sea. The boat was covered with waves, but Jesus was asleep. His disciples shouted for Him to save them! Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea; they became perfectly calm. (Matthew 8:23-27)

Jesus, not the boat, was their safety and rest. Our faith rests on Him. We are in His boat and He is in ours.

Welcome to Shale Fragments, a collection of writings and art for individual and group use!

Teaching God’s truth and the beauty of His Word is my greatest delight! My art card company, Flower Girl Greetings, was launched in 2012 with this purpose. In April 2020, ShaleFragments.com became the gathering place for the writings.

As I have studied the rich meanings of the original Greek and Hebrew languages of the Bible, I continue to see beautiful progressions and connections that compel me to organize and convey their life-changing beauty!
